Connect via VPN

You will need to connect via the VPN client using the profile 'access.yale.edu'.

Multi-factor Authentication (MFA)

Authentication for the VPN requires multi-factor authentication via Duo in addition to your normal Yale credentials (netid and password). After you select 'Connect' in the above dialog box, you will be presented with a new prompt to enter your netid, password and an MFA method.

Depending on what you choose you will be prompted to authenticate via a second authentication method.

  • If you type 'push', simply tap 'Approve' on your mobile device.
  • If you type 'sms' you will receive a text message with your passcode. Enter the passcode you received to authenticate.
  • If you type 'phone', follow the prompts when you are called.

Once you successfully authenticate with MFA, you will be connected to the VPN and should be able to log in the clusters via SSH as usual.

Yale VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a way to securely access a remote network. Yale VPN allows eligible individuals to access Yale resources from a non-Yale internet source as if they were directly connected to the campus network.

Yale uses the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility client to connect to the VPN server. This Cisco client can be downloaded by going to https://software.yale.edu and downloading the Cisco VPN Anyconnect client. After this is done, you can connect to the Yale VPN by finding the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility client in your Programs list in the Start Menu of your PC or in the Applications folder of your Mac. You will need to use your Duo MFA client to establish a VPN connection.
NOTE: After successfully installing the VPN client, you may notice the Connect field in the Cisco client is blank. Please enter access.yale.edu in that field and click Connect to log into the VPN.

Using Yale VPN

To connect to the Yale VPN, launch your previously installed Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility client from your Mac's Application Folder or your PC's Start Menu and click Connect. If there is nothing in the Connect field, please enter access.yale.edu then click Connect. Please enter your NetID in the Username field and your NetID password in the Password field. The Second Password field is where you specify the Duo Authentication Method you are using. The options are outlined below:

  • push
    • This will send you a Duo push notification. An internet connection via cellular data or WiFi is required.
  • sms
    • This will send an SMS text message to your mobile device with a passcode. A cellular connection is required.
  • phone
    • This will initiate a phone call to your device. A cellular connection or landline is required.
  • a 6-digit passcode
    • Retrieve this code from your mobile device. To do so, open the Duo Mobile app. Click the key to the right of Yale University to reveal a one-use passcode. Enter this six-digit number to authenticate. No internet or cellular connectivity is required - you can retrieve codes even when your device is in airplane mode.

VPN IS REQUIRED:

  • To access restricted services and resources on the University and Yale-New Haven Hospital (Y-NHH) network
    • Examples of University restricted services and resources include:

      • File shares from computers located on the Yale Network
      • Library journals and databases
      • Oracle applications
      • Web sites with restricted access
  • If you need remote access to Yale systems or on-campus workstations (via Remote Desktop Protocol [RDP]).

Who can use it?

Any member of the Yale community: students, faculty and staff with an active Yale NetID and a valid Yale email address are eligible to use this service.

Alumni and Affiliates, Yale University Systems, and those individuals with no active role (no active NetID) are ineligible for VPN access. Please see the VPN Procedure for more details. If you have any further questions or would like to request an exception as allowed by the procedure, please complete the VPN Access Request Form. Eligibility and access for all users ends automatically after the user's affiliation with Yale ends.

How much does it cost?

There is no charge for the VPN service, however, some specialized devices (specifically mobile devices) may require the purchase of additional software.
